New Zealand’s Family of 12 have invited Australia’s First Families of Wine to cross the ditch for a glass of wine to discuss everything from working with your parents to the challenges ahead for antipodean wine. From 13th-15th October, seventeen of Australia’s ‘next generation’ members will visit Auckland and Marlborough.
“This is a terrific opportunity for everyone. 24 wine families including Henschke, De Bortoli, Jim Barry, Ata Rangi, Millton, Pegasus Bay and Villa Maria are gathering to talk wine,” says Family of 12 Chair Judy Finn from Neudorf.
“The ultimate purpose of the visit is for both family groups to share ideas, experiences and aspirations whilst also discussing the challenges of family owned businesses. And we hope this is the first step in an alliance which will benefit both countries.”
A tasting of all 24 wineries will be held at Auckland’s Glengarry Wines– and already there is tremendous interest in this unusual and inspiring union.
Succession is in the thoughts of every member of The Family of Twelve and Australia’s First Families of Wine. While some have already experienced the transition of multiple generations working in the business others are yet to cross this important threshold. We share common values and goals but have in some cases, different plans and resources. Both countries, rich in farming and agri-business sectors, have long weathered the challenges and opportunities of succession, some will have done better than others but what’s always been true is that a healthy business is a solid starting point for succession planning.
“The calibre our next generation is impressive – well qualified men and women who’ve stepped outside of the family business to work, travelled, researched and thought deeply about how they might carry on not just the family name but the business too.”
