Auckland distillery 1919 has announced the release of its newest addition, Raspberry Lamington Gin.
The second in the Kiwiana range – following the success of the 1919 Pineapple Bits Gin – 1919 Raspberry Lamington Gin has a crisp and fruity hit of raspberry and a hint of coconut.
Originally called a “Wellington” the lamington was thought to be named after Australia’s Lord Lamington who was governor of Queensland between 1896 and 1901.
But according to experts Auckland University, archived records show a visit Lamington took to Wellington in 1895, before beginning in his tenure as Queensland governor.
According to a New Zealand Herald news report of the visit, Lamington was “much taken with the local sweets provided him by local bakers A.R. Levin.”
Among those sweets, was a “Wellington – a double sponge dessert, dressed in shavings of coconut intended to imitate the snow capped mountains of New Zealand.”
The lamington is now a Kiwi classic which can be found in every bakery.
1919 says Raspberry Lamington Gin is “best served with East Imperial Burma or over ice and perfect for the summer break”.
