The winners of the Aotearoa New Zealand Organic Wine Awards were announced this week, with Quartz Reef Methode Traditionnelle Vintage 2015 Blanc de Blancs named ‘RIEDEL Wine of the Show’.
Other big awards went to Carrick Winery which was named ‘Sustainable Winery of the Year’ and Terrace Edge which was awarded ‘RIEDEL Winery of the Year’.
Now in its eight year, the Aotearoa NZ Organic Wine Awards handed out eight Champion, 41 Gold, 53 Silver and 56 Bronze Medals.
North Canterbury dominated the Champion wines, taking five of the possible eight champion trophies.
The Champion winners were Rippon “Rippon” Mature Vine Pinot Noir, Amisfield Sauvignon Blanc 2020, Terrace Edge Liquid Geography Riesling 2020, Terrace Edge Pinot Gris 2020, Greystone Chardonnay 2019, Quartz Reef Methode Traditionnelle Vintage 2015 Blanc de Blancs, Greystone Syrah 2018 and Terrace Edge Rose 2020.
“Following a difficult year, and an especially testing harvest in 2020, I hope the results of the 2020 vintage wines provide some compensation that all the extra harvest-time effort of social distanced picking, reduced headcount and contact tracing, was well and truly worthwhile,” says Luke Thomas, NZ Organic Wine Awards founder.
Greystone Winemaker Dom Maxwell says their Champion titles acknowledge the efforts of the team and its dedication to organics.
“It’s just that continuation to thrive,” he says. “We’re getting better each year as we improve our understanding of the land and vineyard. It’s taken years of hard work to get to where it is today.”
The Aotearoa Organic Wine Awards differ from other awards in that there are no paid sponsors, no award ceremonies and no entry fees.
The only requirement is that the wine is produced from certified organic grapes.
