The international community of mezcal lovers is championing the agave-based spirit this Mezcal Week – September 8-15.
The brainchild of US based @mezcalistas who aim to encourage everyone to share their love of mezcal, #mezcalweek2021 takes place in bars, restaurants, and cultural institutions globally to celebrate and share all things mezcal.
In New Zealand, the mezcal category has experienced rapid growth internationally as consumer awareness climbs.
With only a handful of brands available in New Zealand as little as two-three years ago, bars such as Auckland’s Ghost Donkey now offer a selection of mezcals, spanning each category and style.
While unable to host the series of mezcal-inspired events in person as originally planned, Ghost Donkey is presenting a week of online programming aimed at those wanting to learn more about mezcal.
Events include factoids, online quizzes, recipes and live cocktail-making classes.
“There is so much variety in the mezcal category, it’s easy to take people on a journey and change perceptions,” says Ghost Donkey Manager & Mixologist Jonny Park.
“It is a spirit to be sipped and savoured like fine whiskey.
“We’re excited for the opportunity #mezcalweek2021 provides to connect with an international community of mezcaleros, suppliers and other aficionados.”
To join the mezcal movement, follow @ghostdonkeyakl on Instagram and to purchase mezcal online, visit La Fuente or Mineral Wines + Spirits.
