Kiwi Sommelier Andrea Martinisi has taken out eighth place at the Association of Sommeliers International (ASI) World Best Sommelier Competition 2023.
The competition took place over five days with 68 champion sommeliers from from 65 countries competing for the title.
Martinisi represented New Zealand for the second time at the competition held in Paris.
“I have learnt so much from these competitions because they force me to get better, to study and to focus and to think about regions and drinks from all over the world that I would otherwise never know about,” he says.
This year of the 68 candidates, 12 (or 18%) were women, in a sector that has historically been dominated by men. Three women being placed in the top six sommelier rankings.
The top three placing were awarded to:
1st Raimonds Tomsons (Latvia)
2nd Nina Jensen (Denmark)
3rd Reeze Choi (China)
