Allan Scott Family Estates, Giesen and Villa Maria took home big wins at The Royal Easter Show Wine Awards announced recently.
One of the most prestigious wine award shows in New Zealand, The Royal Easter Show Awards recognise the highest level of achievement in local winemaking to reflect the huge advances in quality and style witnessed across the industry.
Allan Scott Family Winemakers collected three awards this year – one gold and two silvers for the Cecilia Brut, Allan Scott Late Harvest Riesling 2015 and the Cecilia Vintage 2011 respectively.
Giesen won the Trophy Champion Gewürztraminer with The Brothers Gewürztraminer 2014. It was also awarded gold medals for its The Fuder Clayvin Chardonnay 2014, Giesen The Fuder Matthews Lane Sauvignon Blanc 2014, Giesen Estate Riesling 2015, Giesen Single Vineyard Selection Waihopai Pinot Noir 2015.
Villa Maria claimed the most-awarded winery title, taking home Champion Wine of the Year for its Villa Maria Reserve Hawkes Bay Chardonnay 2014; and Villa Maria’s Group Chief Winemaker Nick Picone was named Winemaker of the Year for the third time (he previously won in 2016 and 2011. In total Villa Maria won 15 Gold Medals and three trophies at the 2017 Royal Easter Show Wine Awards).
