The annual GABS Hottest 100 Kiwi Craft Beers list has been announced with Behemoth Brewing Co’s Brain Smiles Pale Ale claiming the top spot for the second year in a row.
It’s the first time since 2016-17 that there has been a back-to-back winner in the New Zealand GABS Hottest 100, the people’s choice index of the most popular craft beers in New Zealand.
Each year, voters are asked to choose their five favourite beers of the year and this year’s poll had more than 500 beers from 69 breweries to choose from.
Behemoth Brewing Co’s 5.4% Mosaic and Citra Hopped Pale Ale, known as “stupidly easy to drink” and like “pouring smiles on your brain” has become a legend for the brewery from Auckland, appearing in the top 10 for the fourth consecutive year.
“We could not be more proud and honoured for Brain Smiles to have won #1 @gabsfestival hottest 100 Kiwi beers for the 2nd year running!” said Behemoth in a social media post.
“Thanks to everyone who voted and our amazing brew team! A Brain Smiles or 2 to celebrate are in order we think!”
Parrotdog’s Birdseye, first brewed in 2020, and 2021’s Hottest 100 champion retained the silver medal spot on the podium.
And, in a Hottest 100 first, a non-alcoholic beer – Garage Project’s Tiny Hazy IPA – took third spot.
