Hospitality NZ and Lion announce Healthy Hospo programme

Lion NZ and Hospitality New Zealand have announced their partnership to take Lion’s not-for-profit Healthy Hospo health and wellbeing programme to the next level, extending its positive impact to even more hospitality professionals around the country.

Hospitality is a vibrant and rewarding, but demanding industry with some unique health and wellbeing challenges.

Healthy Hospo’s vision is to help create a healthier, happier and more sustainable hospitality industry.

The programme that aims to empower pub, bar, café, restaurant and hotel workers through education, practical workshops and activations on health and wellbeing.

Steve Armitage, Chief Executive of Hospitality NZ, says the partnership is a natural one.

“Hospitality as an industry relies on the health of our workforce, and partnering with Lion to expand the work of Healthy Hospo clearly aligns with our strategic goals of attracting and retaining talent within our industry.

“Lion NZ’s Healthy Hospo programme has undertaken some amazing work in this space, and we are delighted to help take that work forward to reach more hospitality leaders and teams across the motu.”

Lorietta Bahr, Lion NZ’s Healthy Hospo programme Manager, says the partnership creates a platform to deliver a meaningful health and wellbeing programme at scale.

“The majority of operators run small-to-medium sized businesses with limited resources and we recognise that works for nine-to-fivers doesn’t always work for people in hospitality.

“We believe that hospitality staff around Aotearoa can benefit from tailored mental and physical health resources, and we are excited to be extending Healthy Hospo’s reach through our partnership with Hospitality NZ.” says Bahr.

Lion has been running the not-for-profit Healthy Hospo programme since 2020.

From sleep workshops to run clubs, nutrition to leadership, since inception, Healthy Hospo has held workshops and events for more than 3,000 people.

Attendees of the programme have gone on to take up regular exercise, give up smoking, improve their sleep habits, and even run marathons.
