Mumm releases first Pinot Noir ‘table’ wine from Central Otago

Mumm is releasing a Central Otago Pinot Noir, the first ‘still’ fine wine crafted for Mumm’s Terroirs collection.

The Mumm Central Otago Pinot Noir 2021 is the second release in the Mumm Terroirs collection from the South Island wine region, following the inaugural release of its sparkling Mumm Central Otago Blanc de Noirs NV in 2023.

Made from 100% hand-harvested Pinot Noir grapes from the Lowburn sub-region and matured for 16 months in French oak, the wine is a reflection of the land and terroir from which it hails.

Sourced from the world’s most southerly wine region, Central Otago is the only New Zealand region with a continental climate with very cool winters and sometimes frosty springs and autumns, followed by short, hot and dry summers.

This strong, seasonal influence combined with low fertility and free-draining soils, provide the ‘tension’ required to grow outstanding Pinot Noir, with very concentrated berries that have high skin-to-juice ratios.

“We’ve long worked alongside grape growers in the sub-regions to recognise the best vineyard and sites and the 2021 vintage provided us with excellent conditions and fruit to produce this wine,” says New Zealand Mumm Chief Winemaker, Jamie Marfell.

“Creating a fine wine rather than a sparkling wine, speaks to the pioneering and innovative nature of this collection which is dedicated to showcasing Pinot Noir at its pinnacle of quality in the bottle.”

The resulting wine has aromas of black and red cherry, blackberry and blueberry highlights, with a touch of sweet vanilla spice.

The palate is full of dark plum and black cherry, overlayed with sweet dark chocolate, subtle silky fruit tannins and sweet harmonious oak char to finish.

The new release will join the Mumm Terroirs collection, which celebrates prestigious wine regions known for producing exceptional Pinot Noir.

Each of the sparkling and fine wines in the series celebrate a region’s true sense of place and unique terroir including Northern Tasmania, Marlborough, Central Otago and Napa California.

The collection of exceptional sparkling and fine wines is also the accomplishment of passionate winemakers from Australia and New Zealand sharing their winemaking and local knowledge to create modern wines using time-honoured expertise.

Mumm Central Otago Pinot Noir 2021 is available for an RRP of $80.
