A new winery – Shed 530 Estate – has opened in Hawke’s Bay’s Dartmoor Valley.
The New Zealand owned and operated winery is an intimate cellar door and vineyard destination, offering a wide range of wines, including the winery’s new signature Shed 530 label.
Shed 530 grapes are grown in small, estate-operated vineyards across Hawke’s Bay with its own boutique Chardonnay made on-site.
At the helm is Chief Winemaker Kel Dixon who has produced more than 30 vintages across Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough, Canterbury and in the South of France.
He takes over from winemaker John Hancock who created the current vintage wines.
“I’m thrilled to use all my years of experience in winemaking to support a winery with a real vision for the future in a region I’m passionate about,” says Dixon.
Dixon says he appreciates the winery’s hands-off winemaking process to preserve natural flavour profiles and his stand-out wines this vintage include a Sauvignon, Albariño, and Syrah.
“Traditionally, Sauvignon in our region has been regarded as second-rate to those found in Marlborough,” he says.
“However, for our Sauvignon, the Hawke’s Bay vineyard is situated on limestone hills south of Hastings, giving it a fantastic flavour profile akin to Marlborough – but with beautiful fresh intensity and drive.
“Our Albariño is an uncomplicated and very pleasant summer drop. Its fresh and zingy style makes it perfect for enjoying chilled while sitting in the sun with friends.
“And our Reserve Syrah, with its dark fruits and smooth palate, makes for a rich and quintessential Hawke’s Bay Syrah.”
