The medals for the second annual New Zealand Spirits Awards have been announced, with gin proving to be a hugely successful category this year.
Entries were judged in a blind-tasting held in Wellington on the 22nd and 24th July by three panels of liquor experts, including TheShout NZ spirits writer, Tash McGill.
Just three Double Gold Medals were awarded this year, to Broken Heart Gin, Dancing Sands Wasabi Strength Gin and Martell XO Brandy. Entries that receive a Gold Medal from all judges on a panel earn a Double Gold award.
However, the gin category received more than 80 medals all up. The second largest category winner was whisky with 72 medals.
There were 261 total entries entries in the 2020 awards and organisers say the event was a “resounding success”.
New Zealand Spirits Awards dinner will be held in Wellington on 21st August where trophy winners and the winner of the New Zealand Innovation Award will be announced.
