The annual New Zealand Wine of the Year Competition and the New Zealand Wine Awards dinner will not be taking place this year.
The competition, run by New Zealand Winegrowers, usually has entries open from April to September, with judging in October.
However, due to the impact that COVID-19 is having on the New Zealand wine industry, New Zealand Winegrowers says it need to re-prioritise its focus and has made the decision not to hold the competition in 2020.
“Whilst this was a difficult decision to make, we have made it with the best interests of our members and supporters in mind,” says Amber Silvester, Communications Manager, New Zealand Winegrowers.
Silvester says the pause on the competition allows NZ Winegrowers the chance to review and reshape this initiative, “to ensure it best represents and celebrates our industry”.
NZ Wine of the Year is just one of many events locally and globally that have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
