Each week we will be featuring a local bar, pub or club to help boost the Kiwi hospitality industry and encourage customers to get out and explore!
This week Ajinkya (AJ) Jagdale, co-owner of The Hour Glass in New Plymouth, shares some insights into this cocktail, craft beer and tapas bar.
How has business been going post lockdown?
We have been overwhelmed by the consistent support from our community, especially our regulars. We would always like to be busier but are grateful to be back on our feet again.
What have you been doing to encourage customers to come back to your local?
One of our senior staff members has been stuck overseas since March and he has been helping out by boosting our social media presence which we hope has encouraged more people in to eat and drink. We are also running beer and wine tastings, as well as champagne lunches and charity events.
How would you describe the atmosphere of The Hour Glass?
We have tried to make The Hour Glass an inviting, warm atmosphere where people feel comfortable. We have three separate areas to accommodate groups and events.
Why do you think your local stands out from the crowd?
We hold New Plymouth’s widest variety of craft beers from all over the world, as well as a large spirits collection. We pride ourselves on top quality food, hospitality and building rapport with our customers.
What are your 3 top tips for being a great bartender?
1. Having a good memory and remembering faces
2. Being willing to be an underpaid therapist
3. Multi-tasking and working well under pressure
